Santa Fe Madonna Resists Censors - Museum of International Folk Art - Brief Article Art in America, ÊJuly, 2001 Êby Stephanie Cash, ÊDavid Ebony

The controversial "Santa Fe Madonna," source of an ongoing uproar in New Mexico, has escaped censorship, at least for the moment [see "Front Page," June '01].

A state-appointed advisory committee investigating the case will allow the computer-generated image, Our Lady by Alma Lopez, to remain on view as part of an exhibition at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.

However, in deference to protesters, the run of the show has been cut short. Originally scheduled to appear through Feb. 2002, the exhibition will now close on Oct. 28.
