Critics are taking issue with a new art exhibit that depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe in a floral bikini. The photomontage, created by Alma Lopez, a University of California at Irvine graduate, is under attack before the exhibit has even begun. The project, entitled, “Our Lady and Other Queer Santas,” will be showcased during an upcoming conference at Ireland’s University College Cork.
Irish Central‘s Daniel O’Carroll has more:
The conference is to discuss the ins and outs of Chicano culture, alongside a discussion of the plight of Mexicans in US culture, but it’s the exhibit that has been making the headlines recently, and attracting the critics…
The exhibit sits very broadly within the context of a larger debate in Irish society about blasphemy itself.
A controversial ‘Blasphemy Law’ was passed at the start of this year, and was decried as a retrograde step by many in the Irish media at the time.
In July 2009, the Irish parliament passed the controversial blasphemy initiative. According to ABC News, it states:
“A person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding 25,000 euro.”
“…a person publishes or utters blasphemous matter if (a) he or she publishes or utters matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion, and (b) he or she intends, by the publication or utterance of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage.”
With the conference opening tomorrow and with Catholic Bishops and adherents up in arms, there’s no telling how the situation will end. Also, one wonders if, under Irish law, the artwork qualifies as “blasphemy.” According to critics it does, indeed, cause outrage and insult the Christian faith.

Not every woman, or just any woman, would look as beautiful in Our Lady of Guadeloupe’s frock. Mary, and only Mary is what makes that image so potent and moving.
Alma Lopez is obviously a hack who has to rely on controversy to get her art noticed. Yet she doesn’t have the balls to actually be politically incorrect. Ohh, look how cool you are Alma, and original too. People mock Christianity every day, we’ve seen it all when it comes to defiling Mary and Jesus. If you were truly out to rock the establishment why don‘t you do a photomontage of a starving artist giving selling herself out for a curator’s approval.

It is blasphemous, but let God deal with them.
As much as I hate to say it, while it may offend many, make expressions like this legally punishable, we risk other groups outlawing things they consider “offensive”. Look at all the high schools banning God from graduations. While I think there is a clear difference in motives (and appropriateness) between the Virgin Mary in a bikini and thanking God at a graduation, the point is we clamping down on our own freedoms by outlawing such behavior.

The Jews knew Jesus came from a normal, and insignificant family in Nazareth, with a father, mother, and brothers and sisters and that’s one reason they were disgusted by the fact that people were following him. People are people, and no doubt the rumors were that Mary must have been with a man before marrying Joseph. No doubt those rumors followed Jesus too – making it even more impossible for the ruling class to accept that he was the One they were looking for.
God is not impressed by how high on a pedestal Catholics put Mary, but He saves those who trust in His beloved Son, Jesus, who’s one perfect sacrifice, of himself, is forever sufficient.

There are only four brethren of Jesus named in the Gospels:
Matthew 13:55 “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?”
Mark 6:2-3 – “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?”
Let’s begin with James. There are two men named James among the disciples. One, of course, is the brother of John and the son of Zebedee. This cannot be him then. So, this is the other James, called in Scripture James the less:
Mark 15:40: “There were also women looking on afar off: among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less, and of Joseph, and Salome.” (emphasis added)
So James is indeed the son of a woman named Mary. Not only that, but Joseph is his brother. That’s two of the four, right? Then, in Matthew, reciting the names of the twelve:
Matt 10:3: “…’James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddeus.” (emphasis added)
This too is talking of James the less, as the other James, son of Zebedee, is spoken of in the previous verse. It is NOT a trick or really that hard! Alphaeus is this James’ father, not Joseph, the husband of Mary, mother of the Lord.

All you have shown is that Jesus’s brother was not one of the twelve. James was a common name, as were Judas, Simon and Joseph. The reason Catholics are so afraid of the idea that Mary had sex with her husband, is from a wrong understanding of original sin. God gave man sex for more than just procreation. And while we’re at it, let me also add that the Pope is not infallible. He is just a man, like me. He sins and has flaws and he is wrong sometimes.

Look up John 19:25 at http://www.blueletterbible.org/ and click the ‘C’ icon (for the Strong’s Concordance), then click the Strong’s number for the name Cleophas. It comes up “father of James the less, the husband of Mary the sister of the mother of Jesus.”
Did you get that? That Mary, who was the mother of James the less, and of Joseph, from Mark 15:40, is the wife of Cleophas, the father of James the less, and she is called the ‘sister’ of Our Lord’s mother – Mary!
So, two of the four ‘brothers’ have been identified as the children of parents other than Joseph and the Virgin Mary. Of the brothers named, that still leaves Jude and Simon. Next, Jude:
Acts 1:13 “…James, the son of Alphaeus , and Simon Zelo’tes, and Jude the brother of James…” (emphasis added)
There goes Jude out of the mix! Matter of fact, Jude says the same in his own epistle:
Jude 1:1 “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James…” (emphasis added)
Lastly, Simon. Simon, called the Zealot, is identified as coming from Cana, not Nazareth as were Joseph, Mary and the Christ!
Luke 6:15 “and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,” (emphasis added)

That’s fine that scripture addresses her that way, but we are not commanded to. Catholics use it out of context. The problem is we repent directly to God for our sins, not to a person. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we must cry out to Mary for intercession. It does say, however:
John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Why not cry out:
Revelation 4:8 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty–the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”

First off one does not repent to God or anyone else. To repent is to change ones heart and turn back to God. I assume you meant confess ones sins. That being said if you think that Catholics confess Mary you are wildly mis-informed. Nor has the Church commanded us to ask for intercession. Have you ever asked a fellow member to pray for you (to interceed)? Well why don’t you pray to God yourself? Why are you trying to get to God through someone at your church? You see this is a silly arguement. We ask Mary to PRAY for us now and the hour of our death. In regards to John 14:6 yes Jesus is the way to Heaven. In regards to Revelation 4:8 we do cry this out at EVERY Mass.
Also how do we take Hail Mary out of context? Also where does the Bible tell you to ONLY confess your sins DIRECTLY to God. Because you should read the rest of the Gospel of John Specifically John 20.

If this is where you are getting your info you really need to find a new “pastor” or whatever this site is to you.
The Old Testament is fulfilled in the New and the New is consealed in the Old. With that said… Mary is called “woman” by Paul not as a insult or as a “generic” term. She was called “woman” because Eve was called “woman”. If Jesus is new Adam then there has to be new Eve. Just as there is an Old Testament Ark of the Covenant there is a New Testament Ark. If she was not a very important person then why did Jesus proform His first miracle at Her request? If you study the ENTIRE Bible you will see that Jesus PERFECTS everything in the Old Testament.

Many who say the things you do know really nothing about the Catholic faith. You make your comments based on biased superficial information. Mary was chosen to be the mother of the Incarnate Eternal Word of the Most Holy Trinity; actually, God in human form. As the Bible says the humanity of Jesus was assumed into the eternal Word by a singular action of the Holy Spirit. (Luke1:28-55). As Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus, concomitantly she is the Mother of God; as Jesus is co-equal as the Eternal Word to the Father and the Holy Spirit. At the Cross she was given to us through the apostle John as our spiritual mother. Mary was the close companion of Jesus up until his public life, his last three years. If you would not care to see your own mother thusly treated, how do you think the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the eternal Word of the Most Holy Trinity, feels about a painting that desecrates his mother? Would you say the same things to Him as you have just written?

I’m not a Roman Catholic, so I don‘t place Mary on any higher pedestal or ’sainthood’.
She was clearly an exceptional woman to have been chosen by God to be the virgin mother of Christ, but, she was a human like you and I. While I respect her, I still see her as equal to you and I.
No offense meant to Catholics, this is just my belief. I understand the Catholic Church appoints people as ‘saints’, its just that, as a Christian, who is not a Catholic, I do not recognize canonization. I still respect the people your Church has named as “saints”, since they clearly were exceptional people or they would not have been named ‘saints’ by the Papacy.
I find it very disrespectful, and I disapprove of it. I would never do it or condone it.

Odd, I’d think that only Catholics would be upset by this. I had a Southern Baptist recently tell me that Mary has become “an idol of the papists,” and that true Christians don’t think she had anything special to her. No idea if that’s true.
I don’t see it as insulting, because I don’t really care about artists or whatever heresies they might like to promote. Controversy sells, so it’s not surprising. Wouldn’t shed a tear if he ended up getting fined in Ireland though!

God chose Mary for this wonderful privilege due to her impeccable reputation and cleanness. California has a history of attacking religion, especially Christianity and Catholics. In this case, I think a fuse has been lit they were not ready for. Chicano culture as well as Mexican culture is deeply Catholic and hold their beliefs with passion. The idea that Catholics worship idols is false. The graven images God originally addressed concerned the surrounding nations who worshiped idols such as those by the Philistines, a half fish, half man idol called Dagon. As to making “idols”: Apparently no one here knows where the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe came from. It came from HEAVEN. No artist painted it. It was created on a tilma made of cactus cloth worn by Juan Diego to whom the Mother of God appeared in 1570 in Mexico. At the time, Mexico still had human sacrifice. Mary appeared to the simple Juan Diego and told him to go to the bishop and ask him to build a chapel. The bishop asked for a sign that this was truly from heaven. When Juan Deigo next saw the lady on the barren hill in the middle of December, she told him to hold out his tilma. When he did, she told him to close it and only open it for the bishop. When the bishop saw that it was filled with beautiful roses in the midst of winter, he was surprised. As the roses fell to the ground, he was astonished to see the image of the lady embellished on the tilma. This image has been investigated and studied over and over since that time. Today it hangs in the basilica built in her honor in Mexico City. The paint has never faded and the cactus cloth tilma which should have disintegrated within 20 years is intact to this day. In the pupils of her eyes, you can see the reflection of Juan Diego kneeling at her feet. This image is full of symbolism and because of this apparition, millions were converted in Mexico and it soon became a Catholic country.

As to asking for the intercession of the Mother of God, it should be realized that Christ only performed His first miracle at Cana because of the request of His mother. When He said: “What would you have Me do, you know My hour has not yet come?” But Mary was undeterred. She said to the stewards, “Do as He tells you.” And so He did.
As children, when we wanted something from our fathers, didn’t we always ask our mother to ask him for us? We understood easily that he would listen to her more thoughtfully but might easily dismiss our desires as of no importance. Why would you ask your friends and others to pray for your intentions and ignore asking the Mother of Jesus who is in heaven with Him? Did He not give her intercession to all of us from the Cross when He said to John, “Son, behold thy mother.” This is also the sensible reason we ask the saints in heaven to interceed for us. Jesus would surely think more of His good friends who are with Him and consider their requests when He has every reason to ignore us for our sinfulness and neglect of our spiritual duties. In His mercy, he does consider us and our every need, but it sure helps to have friends in heaven.

If this were an American exhibition, 1) it would be rightfully protected by freedom of speech, and 2) it would be rightfully protested by everyone who disagreed with it (picket signs, boycotts, phone calls, etc.) And then it would fade away. The one unfortunate part of all this is that in America, it would also have been FUNDED WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS. That’s the one part that should be illegal! Sad to read so much misinformation regarding Roman Catholic teaching in regard to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She is not an idol and she is not a god (referring to comments herein saying Catholics idolize her and the saints; and the comment about deifying her). Being the Mother of Jesus, Catholics pray to her for intercession with her Son. Those familiar with the New Testament should remember the “Wedding at Cana”. A son (in this case “the perfect son”) acted upon the wishes of his mother. I think that is more the Catholic feeling toward Mary than the idolization and deification comments expressed herein. Bottom line however, is that this painting is an ourtage to all men of good will.

The Golden Calf during the time of Moses or Ball in the Old Testament are idols, Mary was real. catholics may have a statue of Mary or Jesus in the chuch but only to help focuc on the one you want your prayers to be heard by. We DON’T pray to the statue–we pray to the saint or Jesus, period. Your post has led me to believe that you think we are not Christian. I dont know what the atheists ,leftist and progressives plans are by doing all these things against people of Faith, but in my case the only thing that has been accomplished is that I Pray to God more often ,a couple of more Our Fathers and an extra ACT of Contrition and a Hail Mary before I go to bed, I attend church with my family more than I have in years ,and have just started to look for a nice Catholic school for my daughter whom I kneel and pray with every night.. I too just recently returned to the Catholic Church last January. I walked away from God over 40 years ago and made my first confession in as many years. That confession was the hardest thing I ever did in my life but now I go every Saturday, confess, make my penance and then sit in the pew and pray the Rosary while I wait for the Saturday Vigil Mass at 4:30 and receive Communion in a state of grace.

She, as the mother of Him (in his human nature) is the most righteous of us all (save Him as He is infinitely greater than her). That is why in the traditional scriptures she is called “full of grace”. One who is full of grace has no room for sin. If she is full of grace she is the greatest intercessor of all. When you ask God directly, he may not answer you as you are not righteous. If you ask her to ask Him, you have a greater chance is he answers the prayers of the righteous. Besides, would you deny your mother a request? Would He? :)

Mary (the new Eve) is the medium through with Christ (the new Adam) comes. This is why in the traditional translations of Genesis say of her “he will await her heel”. She was the one who was tricked and so she is the one who crushes him. Besides is there anything more humiliating for the Lucifer to be defeated by the “weaker vessel”? :}

By the way, Catholics do not worship Mary or saints. The do venerate Mary and saints. And statues are not worshiped, they are simply reminders of those who have come before us and who can inspire us by their example. Much in the same way that families show respect for deceased grandparents whose photos are displayed or communities recognize civic and military leades with statues. Also, do keep in mind that scripture says, in regards to Mary, that she is “full of grace” and that “all generations whill call her blessed.” How does one love Jesus and denegrate His mother through ignorance and slander?

The Catholic church, founded by Jesus Christ circa 33AD(Mt 16:18), does not believe in idol worship. But she does hold the Mother of God in high regard as we all should (Jn 19:26-27; Lk 1:48), because she points us to her son Jesus Christ (Jn 2:5).

America has OUR Constitution and First Amendment. ANYTHING other than treason, slander, libel and dangerous speech (shouting “Fire” in a crowed theatre) is protected speech. Dangerous Speech does NOT include something that is merely offensive to someone. With the great variety of cultures represented here, anything you say MAY be offensive to someone. There is NO Constitutional Amendment that guarantees you the right NOT to be offended.
That was the LEGAL angle on this. As for the MORAL side, this is offensive. If the creator has any claim at all to being Christian, their pastor should have a serious talk with them. They may be an Athiest. Either way, the general public need to chime in about how offensive and in bad taste this exibit is. One of the most effective punishments in the pre-industrial world was “shunning”. Everyone in the community pretends that the offending individual does not exist. You don’t see them, you don’t hear them. People need to learn to respect others if we’re going to get along.

I am just as shocked and appalled by some of the comments in this forum about Catholics (and one of you even attacked Mormons) as I am of the art.
Catholics and Mormons have a right to their beliefs just as you do. Last time I looked, there is still freedom of religion in this country. People complain about the freedoms they are losing, but then procede to marginalize others of a different faith. Are your Pastors teaching you this kind of thinking?
I am a Catholic and we consider Protestants as our brothers and sisters in Christ. We pray for you all the time. We welcome you to visit our churches anytime. Our arms are outstretched to you. Please get to know us and learn the truth about what we really believe.
By the way, I have known many Mormon families and they are wonderful people. We are all God’s children, whether some of us except that or not. He is the creator of all the world.
