Supporting Chicana Artists

Esmeralda Huerta

I was born in Hollywood, California, but moved three years later to the San Fernando Valley with my family. I am the third child of six. My parent migrated from Mexico in the '80's pursuing a better living with better opportunities. Ever since I can remember, I grew great interest in education which I can say lead to whom I have become today. In part, my parents and siblings have contributed to my dreams and goals. Growing up with two older brothers and three younger sisters helped in the development of my outlook in life.
After graduating from high school I moved to Santa Cruz, where I attended the University of California of Santa Cruz. Being the first in my family to leave home was not easy for me or my family. I later transferred to Loyola Marymount University where I will be receiving my Bachelor’s in Sociology. I intend to teach and therefore continue with my education.
I chose to research on Elsa Flores in my Chicanas/Latinas in the U.S. I found great interest in the idea that I would have the opportunity to learn more about Chicanas. Once given the opportunity to work on a project, Elsa Flores was my first choice. I found her life story very interesting. Her work is a great depiction of the passion she not only has in art, but also in her roots.
I hope to contribute in my field, Education, just as much as she has contributed in her field, Art. I think it is great to learn about successful Chicanas/Latinas that have contributed to the education of the youth.
