Martha Pina was born in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico
1940s
Martha and her family moved to the United States and settled in El Paso, Texas.
1962
Cotera received her Bachelor's Degree from University of Texas at El Paso
1963
Martha married her classmate, Juan Cotera
1969
Martha participated in Crystal City Walkouts, with young Chicana/os in Texas
1970
Martha Cotera became a member of La Raza Unida Party in Texas
1971
She received a Masters Degree in Education from Antioch College
1972

Martha ran as a candidate for the State Board of Education on the Raza Unida Party ticket. She helped create the Chicana Caucus within Texas Women's Political Caucus. She was also an early organizer of the Mexican American Business and Professional Womens's Association.

She founded Information Systems Development, which is an independent research & publishing company. She wanted to give an outlet to publications by, for, or about Mexican Americans.
