Student Biography

My name is Lorena Flores and I am a senior at Loyola Marymount University.  I am the first in my

family to attend a four year university.  When I first enrolled at LMU, I was a Psychology major, but

once I took an intro to Chicano Studies course with Dr. Davalos I yearned and grew curious to learn

more about what makes me a Chicana, my history, and all the different aspects about Chicanos/as,

including art, literature, and culture production.  With all that I have learned with my Chicano/a

Studies courses, I know it will take me far in life because it has opened my eyes and into a new way of

thinking about not only myself but the world.   When I decided to take the class, Chicanas and Latinas

in the U.S. with Dr. Lopez, and she handed out the syllabus I couldn’t wait to start working on this

website project and start researching.  I chose Gloria Anzaldúa as my person to research because she

has contributed and paved a new way of thinking about borders, sexuality, hybridity, and many other

factors that play in what it means to be a Chicana.   I agree with her views about borders and I believe

that in order to survive as a Chicana we should live without borders and live at a crossroads.  Anzaldúa

is a passionate person and that’s why I chose her because of her determination, focus, passion, and love

for all types of people.  Some of my interests are dancing, playing sports, and hanging out with my family.
